Class management

Whatever subject you teach, the working atmosphere in the classroom and the extent to which you are in relaxed and assured control of the classes you teach will have a big inflluence on the extent to which you are able to enjoy your teaching, and the extent to which pupils can learn. The following resources are designed to provide some guidance to help to develop your understanding of how teachers and student teachers try to get a good working atmosphere in their classrooms.

  • The working atmosphere in the classroom: a 10 point scale
  • How do you get them quiet?
  • Moving pupils?
  • Sending pupils out?
  • ‘Coping’: how do teachers handle things when they are not in complete control?
  • Skilful blending of high and low value activities: see pages 39-42 of the Learning to teach history in the secondary school book.
  • Some resources on managing pupil behaviour
