T2 Exercise 11

Famous people in British history

People have been famous in different ways and for different things. In table 1, put the following into the box in which you think they belong, and put them in chronological order, and then, in table 2 put them in the time slot where you think they belong. If they are female, put them in bold text. If they are not real people, delete them. If you think any of them are famous because they have been BAD, underline them.

Boudicca King Arthur Emily Davison Mrs Pankhurst Nelson

Marlborough Wellington Elgar Rutherford Watt Cromwell

Richard III Charles I Henry VIII Winston Churchill John Lennon

Florence Nightingale Haig Constable Turner Mary Seacole

Robin Hood Ned Ludd Victoria Hargreaves Dyer Scott

Newton Montgomery Drake Raleigh George III Wesley

Famous people in british history

The level of difficulty of the exercise can be adjusted by amending the names given her, or adding or reducing the overall number of people mentioned. Pupils can insert comment boxes to give a brief biography of the ones that they know. The exercise also raises questions about what it takes to be famous in Britain, and whether the criteria have changed over time. (This can link in to a visit to the National Portrait Gallery or a lesson using resources from the Portrait Gallery).
